PSCC Meeting April 17: Rachel Wold from NANOOS

Alternating between travelogues and tech talks, for our April meeting we have Rachel Wold from Nanoos presenting info from real world UW and NOAA research. Rachel Wold from the UW will demonstrate their free online routing and trip planning tool, the NVS Boaters App. The NANOOS Visualization System (NVS) uses real-time observations and weather forecasts, plus tides and current data to help mariners plan a safe and efficient trip.

NVS Boaters App was created by the Northwest Association of Networked Ocean Observing Systems (NANOOS), and was designed to access and utilize the broadest set of ocean data, tools, products, and knowledge. Rachel will provide an overview of the project, as well as demonstrate how to use the NVS Boaters App to plan a trip, how view potential routes, as well as how to get in-route updates so you can take the safest, most efficient path forward. It’s worth digging into while you have good internet.

Cruise Report: March 2026 Port Orchard Rendezvous

March 27–29, 2026

This year’s Port Orchard Rendezvous was a great success and enjoyed by all who attended. Chris and Chris from Scintilla hosted, as Port Orchard is their home port. Attendees included Mike and Chris from Surt, and Jeff and Sharon—with their guest Barbara—from Boog, both boats moored side by side. Greg from Therapy was unable to attend due to a last-minute emergency. Lee Youngblood later joined by land in time to capture a few obligatory photos.

Friday night arrivals gathered for dinner at Kai Sao, a delightful and authentic Thai restaurant. On both Saturday and Sunday mornings, Chris and Chris kindly shuttled the group to the popular Pancake House & Diner, where there was something for everyone.

After breakfast on Saturday, part of the group attended the No Kings Rally, some equipped with signs and enjoying the chance to express themselves. Later, everyone boarded the Port Orchard–Bremerton foot ferry and spent a few hours exploring the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Museum. About half the group followed this with a long walk before returning by ferry.

At 6:00 p.m., the group reconvened on the dock and headed out for a Chinese dinner together. The evening concluded with an extended session aboard Boog, where the engineers set about solving the world’s problems.

Sunday morning brought a final breakfast before everyone headed home. All agreed it was a fun, relaxed, and intimate gathering. For next year, the planning committee may consider moving the event a couple of weeks later to coincide with the start of the Saturday market at the marina.
